Coast 2 Coast: Shaking Things Up

What does the revised WWE look like after the Superstar Shakeup?

A bunch of superstars switched brands this week, and we’re still trying to sort out the winners and losers from the week. Lingering questions will surely be answered in the weeks to come. Plus, Braun Strowman puts on a backstage beatdown for the ages.

1) As reported, Drew McIntyre is back in WWE/NXT. What are your thoughts on this?

Corey: I love it. I think it gives him another chance to be rebuilt into the star he was meant to be. If WWE keeps the lame gimmicks away from him then he could definitely end up being main event material.

Josh: McIntyre is what you’d think of in the prototypical WWE model of wrestler, but one of the best things that’s happened to McIntyre over the last several years is he’s built a fan base through solid indie wrestling matches. There’s good things on the horizon for him and he’s easily someone that could anchor NXT for a year or two before re-debuting on the main roster.

2) Word is going around that Jinder Mahal is going to be pushed as an upper Midcard heel on Smackdown. Do you think this could work?

Corey: Personally I find him incredibly boring in the ring. He has an intense look but an incredibly boring move set and doesn’t really entertain me on the mic either. Hopefully he can turn it around but at the current time I don’t have any interest in a Jinder push.

Josh: Definitely. Jinder has to this point always drawn the short straw and been stuck with odd stables or tag teams. I’m not saying it’s a surefire win if he’s given the opportunity to strike out on his own, but at least we’ll get a better idea of what he has to offer. I just hope they stay away from the easy cultural/racial villain and give us an actual character.

3) What did you think of the Superstar Shakeup?

Corey: I thought that they would have made announcements for everyone that changed brands, but the crowd finding out via their entrances is ok too I guess. Smackdown got gutted again but even still Smackdown still has the talent to continue putting on the show with superior matches. Especially with Nakamura and AJ both on the same brand! Fingers crossed for a Mania match for the two of them. Also Dean is back on Raw which means eventually there’s going to be a Shield reunion in some compacity. Personally I think they should wait two or three more years before they pull the trigger on that.

Josh: A little underwhelming. The shakeup lacked logic. And not in the “they should have moved this person instead of this person” but in they why. Why did Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan move their No. 1 pick from last year — Dean Ambrose? Why did Raw move flip Charlotte to Smackdown? Who was traded for who? If they gave us more reasoning then there would have been more for us to chew on throughout the week. Instead, everything feels like a cosmetic change instead of something we should really pay attention to.

4) What did you think of the Roman Reigns attack from Braun Strowman?

Corey: Loved it. Braun is getting pretty over with the crowd and these two have great chemistry. I’d love for Roman to take a week or two off and then come back for vengeance with a slightly different look and a new finisher.

Josh: It was great. I’ll be honest that I groaned when it first started because I was expecting them to move on from this feud, but as it continued I just stopped caring and enjoyed what was one of the most memorable backstage beatdowns we’ve seen in some time.

5) The Miz is another wrestler that got moved to Raw after the shake up. What are your thoughts on this?

Corey: It really worries me because on Smackdown Miz could thrive and work his way back into the main event especially after the stellar year he’s had, but with all the star power on Raw I’m afraid he’ll get relegated to the mid-card again.

Josh: The Miz is someone who may be really negatively affected getting moved to Raw. Miz had a good thing going on Smackdown and I’m concerned that he might not get as much freedom on the flagship show. Hopefully he continues to trend up, but his mock Daniel Bryan move-set won’t carry the same weight on Raw as it did on Smackdown.

Additional notes:

Corey:
– Rumors are going around as well that there will eventually be a Strowman vs Lesnar showdown and I can’t wait!
– Please oh please do not give us another Zayn vs Owens feud again.

Josh:
– I’m glad the Revival are seemingly being treated like the all-star tag team they are. Though with the New Day’s move to Smackdown I’m not sure who is the best team for the Revival to begin feuding with.
